Comedy Star Mary Tyler Moore

The veteran TV comedy star Mary Tyler Moore is set to pass surgery to remove a meningioma – the type of tumor, usually benign, which may arise in the meninges, the brain protective outer membrane.

“On the recommendation of his neurologist, who is monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Maria decided to start this fairly routine procedure,” an unnamed representative of the 74-year-old actress told People magazine Thursday.

Press Secretary Alla Plotkin told The Associated Press on Thursday that the transaction date has not yet been established.

Two neurosurgeons not involved in helping Moore agreed that it was probably not at great risk of meningioma.

“Meningitis is one of the most common brain tumors in adults. They are benign and in many cases completely resectable [removable by surgery],” said Dr. Arno H. Fried, a Department of Neurosurgery at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey “They grow slowly and occasionally looked at some time in order to determine if it should be removed. If the meningioma is large enough, causing symptoms and grows, it should be removed. This is a common operation for the neurosurgeon who sees cases of brain tumor as a significant part of their practice. ”

Another neurosurgeon said that doctors usually decide to act on the basis of the nature of the tumor and any symptoms.

“Sometimes [tumors] is removed before the patient becomes symptomatic, if we are concerned about the rate of growth,” said Dr Anders Cohen, chief of neurosurgery at Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York. “The problem is based on the place where it grows. Depending on what part of the brain tumor pressing against will determine the symptoms, which can be as easy as headaches or seizures, or may affect the movement, vision or speech.”

He added that the results of Moore after the operation is likely to be good.

“The forecast for the removal of meningioma is usually very successful, and much depends on the patient before surgery, and the size and location of the tumor,” Cohen said. “The vast majority of patients do well and return to their former way of life.”

Moore is best known for her starring roles in two popular comedies, Television, Dick Van Dyke Show in the 1960′s and 1970′s hit The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Moore was also nominated for an Oscar for her role in 1981 in Ordinary People. Type 1 diabetes for many years, she is chairman of the International Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The show airs live at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. This year, the surprise guest will be the notoriously ugly Xoloitzcuintli dogs, who have finally made the American Kennel Club’s list of 170 recognized purebreds.

The cameras all may be turned on the green field where the dogs take their award-deciding walks, but the real fun — as Christopher Guest’s brilliant film “Best in Show” showed us — takes place behind the scenes, where the dogs undergo beauty treatments on par with those in the best Hollywood salons. From hair trimming to fur curling, to teeth cleaning to paw manicuring, and from puppy massages to five-star hotel rooms, these dogs undergo a rigorous routine.

Hours after experiencing an unsettling on-air inability to speak while covering the Grammys last night, Serene Branson is said to be feeling fine.

“Serene Branson was examined by paramedics on scene immediately after her broadcast,” Branson’s station, KCBS, said in a statement. “Her vital signs were normal. She was not hospitalized. As a precautionary measure, a colleague gave her a ride home and she says that she is feeling fine this morning.”

The reassuring news comes as a surprise to some, given the worrisome nature of Branson’s inability to articulate real words. She started her report by saying, “A very heavy blurtation tonight” before her speech devolved into complete gibberish.

“I am a little surprised,” Dr. John Krakauer, associate professor of neurology and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, told CBS News. “Frankly, I would have admitted her.”

Dr. Krakauer, who is not involved in Branson’s care, said that Branson might have suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA), a sort of “mini-stroke” that causes only transient problems. Some patients who are seen at a hospital for a TIA are allowed to go home without being admitted, he said.

He said it was also possible that Branson had suffered a seizure or experienced a rare condition associated with migraine headaches.

But whatever happened to Branson, Dr. Krakauer said her problem should serve as a reminder that stroke can happen even to young people. In fact, he said, each year in the U.S. about 50,000 people under the age of 50 have a stroke.

In addition to sudden problems thinking of or saying words, symptoms of stroke include a drooping face, the loss of vision in one eye, or the loss of movement or sensation on one side of the body.
